Patrick Baughan, Senior Lecturer in Educational Development at the Department of Learning Enhancement and Development at City University London will lead TLC webinar on Tuesday the 26th of May, 12-1pm GMT* during which we will discuss Sustainability in higher education.
Information: The purpose of this webinar is to discuss an empirical study in which I invited university staff employed in the field of educational development to provide their views about sustainability in higher education. The aims of the study were to: (a) seek educational developer views about whether sustainability (particularly sustainability in the curriculum) could form a more central part of their own work; (b) invite comment about the current Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Sustainable development in higher education policy. The study seeks to offer some rich data from the ‘educational developer voice’ about sustainability, which could be useful for informing future versions of relevant policy, but that might also be helpful in casting light on the relationship between educational development and sustainable development. The project was undertaken by way of nine semi-structured interviews at six different (UK based) universities. In light of its outcomes, I will explain that educational developers offer varied conceptions and accounts of sustainability, and different views about its role and position in relation to university curricula. I will argue that sustainability is an area that should not be imposed on educational developers but that it provides an opportunity for that community. In addition, policy needs to provide more direction about sustainability in teaching, curricula, and other areas of pedagogy, and here too educational developer perspectives could be valuable and should be sought out.
Patrick Baughan is Senior Lecturer in Educational Development at the Department of Learning Enhancement and Development (‘LEaD’), City University London. He has a major role in developing and teaching on the University’s MA Academic Practice (staff development) programme, also providing bespoke sessions and advice on a range of pedagogic issues to colleagues across the University and in the sector. Patrick’s research interests are based around educational integrity and plagiarism prevention, assessment and feedback, sustainability in higher education, and the development of newer researchers. His current work examines conceptions of sustainability amongst sociology staff and students in relation to academic identity. He has a long-standing involvement with the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). He is completing part-time PhD studies at the University of Lancaster.
