On the 11th July research group SEEG in partnership with Centre of Excellent in Learning and Teaching (CELT) are hosting a joint workshop: Pedagogies for Sustainability, Responsible Enterprise and Innovation.

The workshop draws together in-house MMU expertise, recent CELT-funded research , and good practice from external and international case studies to look at how new and innovative pedagogical approaches, including Problem and Enquiry Based Learning (PEBL) short training courses (Carbon Literacy) and online-technology facilitated learning can help us stay at the forefront of enhanced student experience and pedagogical innovation. We will hear about case examples from Nottingham Trent University, and internationally from colleagues from Arizona State (USA) and Aalborg (DK) Universities.

NUS Responsible Futures meeting

Dear Colleagues,

 

We have the pleasure to invite you to Manchester Met’s National Union of Students (NUS) Responsible Futures (RF) meeting on the 4th of May at 2 pm in BS 311, hosted by the Sustainable and Ethical Enterprise Group (SEEG).

The NUS Responsible Futures project aims to place social responsibility and environmental sustainability at the heart of education across UK universities and colleges. The NUS Responsible Futures accreditation aligns with other accreditations and initiatives including People and Planet University League, QAA subject benchmarks, PRME, EQUIS, AACSB, Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES).

Manchester Met was one of 15 universities and colleges to pilot the RF project, helping to develop the standard. We achieved our institutional accreditation in 2015 – the feedback report can be found here:

A reaccreditation audit will be taking place on May 16th and 17th, where a selection of criteria must be met through a partnership between our institution and Students’ Union.

There are great examples of teaching, engagement and research activities across Manchester Met that are relevant for the reaccreditation. However, keeping up to date with all your great work is not always easy. This is why we have the pleasure to invite you to an hour meeting in which we will provide an overview of NUS Responsible Futures project/accreditation, followed by a discussion from which we will gather information to showcase to the student auditors and the NUS.

Using storytelling in education for sustainable development (ESD)

CALL FOR CHAPTER CONTRIBUTIONS

We are pleased to announce a forthcoming Routledge book on using storytelling in education for sustainable development (ESD). We anticipate that potential contributors will be colleagues with an interest/expertise in one or more of the following areas: Storytelling, ESD in Higher Education, Innovative Pedagogies. Book editors will be Heather Luna and Dr Petra Molthan-Hill  (both Nottingham Trent University), Dr Denise Baden (University of Southampton) and Professor Tony Wall (University of Chester). To facilitate the writing process, we are offering an initial webinar.

 

WHAT: Storytelling & Sustainability Webinar

WHEN: Wednesday 25th April 3-5pm BST (2-4pm UTC)

WHERE: on Zoom

HOW: You will receive a link prior to the webinar that you click to join. You will need a webcam and microphone (embedded ones are fine). If you are unfamiliar with Zoom, Heather will arrange a practice run to ensure the technology goes smoothly for all.

 

This webinar will consist of:

* An overview of what we would expect from a submitted chapter, with Q&A

* A small group activity with others in your discipline area

* A round of sharing ideas

* A small interdisciplinary group activity

* Time outside the webinar to develop ideas

* Another round with your interdisciplinary group to report back

* A round-up of ideas and further Q&A

Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti: Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change, at the Department of Educational Studies, University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Vanessa has extensive experience working across sectors internationally in areas of education related to international development, global citizenship, indigeneity and social accountability.  Her work combines poststructuralist and postcolonial concerns in examining educational discourses and designing viable pedagogical pathways to address problematic patterns of international engagements, flows and representations of inequality and difference in education. Kerry Morrison – Environment Artist and In-Situ Director

Kerry Morrison merges art with ecology to produce intriguing interventions in the everyday landscape of our urban lives. Through a conspicuous process of walking, talking, listening, drawing, collecting, and performance, she explores people’s connections with the environment: how we move through it, take from it, and add to it. Her approach is durational and transitory whereby art is a verb: a process of action, dialogue, and performative patterns resulting in new, shared experiences and unfolding narratives. She co-founded InSitu, a not-for-profit artist-led organization based in Pendle, East Lancashire. In Situ nurtures into existence art that addresses local issues with the aim to make a positive difference to people’s lives and the environment.

Mary Courtney – visual artist and poet

“I like to experiment with drawing and different visual art forms, to play with words and ideas and bring out creativity in others”.

Mary has been artist in residence at Warwick University Chemistry Department during 2016, leading art workshops for staff and students and scripting and producing a chem-art film called “Planet Biscuit: Into the Micronosphere”. She’s organised giant community map-making events, with hundreds of participants, including the “Mappa Magnificellaneous” this year. Art-poetry combinations have been exhibited at Compton Verney, Tate Modern and MediaCityUK. She has received poetry awards from the National Poetry Competition, the International Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine and Cambridge University.

Audiovisual material in teaching – ESD-

You are warmly invited to attend the next Sustainability in the Curriculum meeting  (Manchester Met in collaboration with UoM)

We will be exploring with Dr Vitalia Kinakh (School of Dentistry)  how audiovisual material (video clips, films and images) can be used to present/engage students with sustainability issues. Dr Kinakh will  discuss how she  is using audio visual materials to present sustainability related issues  in dentistry.

You are invited to ‘bring’ to this meeting any audiovisual materials you (staff and students)  use for the purpose of engaging others with sustainability issues. These will form a part of our explorations.

 

Discussion questions may include the following (alongside any questions/related topics that you would like to discuss in relation to this topic):

  •       Do educators from different faculties/schools make use of audiovisual resources in their teaching to illustrate issues of sustainability?
  •       Does the use of audiovisual resources help students to make emotional connection to sustainability?
  •    Who should be responsible for selecting audiovisual resources for use in lectures/ seminars?

Roundview
The RoundView

The RoundView is an ongoing research project and initiative led by Dr. Joanne Tippett at the University of Manchester. The subject of this work is the knowledge, skills, and behaviours that are needed in order to create sustainable solutions and development, locally and globally. Simple, accessible models of sustainability and of the systemic changes that can lead us in that direction have been developed together with hands-on tools and resources for teaching and training them. This workshop will introduce the RoundView framework and also discuss how it has been used to promote critical thinking and exploration in a range of teaching settings – from post-graduate to primary school settings.

key component of the RoundView framework is a clear and powerful model of how ecosystems and ecological cycles work to provide our ‘Global Life Support System’. This can be viewed as our ‘Big Heritage’ – the heritage of our species, globally, which forms the essential context for our society, culture and economy. This workshop will also discuss current work with the Great Manchester Wetlands Project to trial the RoundView as a means for motivating a wide range of community members and stakeholders to get involved in regenerating the post-industrial landscape between Manchester and Wigan.
